A Hearing Test, Explained

A visit to the doctor can be stressful for some people.  Below is a brief explanation of what you can expect to happen when you have your hearing evaluated at our office.

Detailed History

We’ll begin by taking a detailed history. We’ll ask a series of questions about your medical, work and personal life as it relates to your ears and your hearing.

Physical Examination

The next step is an examination of your ears.  We’ll thoroughly examine your ears for any physical condition that might indicate a need for a medical referral.

Pure Tone Audiometry

This is what you probably think of as a “hearing test”.  Your hearing levels are measured using tones and words.  Providing us with sensitivity levels and discrimination ability.

What Happens After the Test?

We will explain the results to you and if the results indicate a problem, we’ll provide you with recommendations.  We believe your journey to better hearing should be a partnership with you and your hearing healthcare professional.

The Benefits of Treating Hearing Loss

The good news is that hearing loss is treatable for most people. Today’s advanced hearing aids can effectively address various types and degrees of hearing loss, helping individuals hear better in diverse situations. Experts strongly recommend early intervention. Untreated hearing loss can lead to numerous health issues and social isolation. The longer hearing loss goes unchecked, the more challenging it becomes to adapt to treatment and fully regain lost sounds. Timely intervention offers the best chance to improve hearing health and enhance overall quality of life.

Hearing Loss Over Time

For most people, hearing loss doesn’t happen overnight. Instead, it’s gradual, slowly getting worse over the years. This gradualness can be deceiving, and can cause many people to be unsure that what they’re experiencing is really hearing loss.

How to Convince Someone They Need a Hearing Test

If you’re concerned that your loved one might be experiencing hearing loss, it’s important to have an open and honest conversation. Instead of constantly repeating yourself or raising your voice, consider suggesting they get their hearing checked. Explain that modern hearing aids can significantly improve their quality of life.
